Born in 1955 in Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine), he studied composition at the State Conservatory P.I. Tchaikovsky in Moscow with Edison Denisov. In 1989, he co-founded the Association for Contemporary Music in Moscow, which represented a group of composers who publicly distanced themselves from the artistic doctrine and cultural philosophy of the Soviet Union. In 1993 he founded the Center for Contemporary Music at the Moscow Conservatory and the Studio for New Music Ensemble, and in 1994 he founded the Moscow Forum Festival. He is a professor of composition at the Tchaikovsky conservatory.
