Sharka Hyland grew up in Czechoslovakia. She studied Russian literature and the history of European avant-gardes at the Albert-Ludwig University in Freiburg, Germany and at Yale University. She received her MFA in Graphic Design from the Yale School of Art in 1988. Hyland currently teaches Fine Arts and Visual Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Her text-based drawings have been shown in many solo and group exhibitions, most recently at Gallery Joe in Philadelphia and at Bernard Jordan Galerie in Paris. In 2016 she became an FID Prize Finalist and was awarded the Bader Fund grant for research on David Foster Wallace’s work.
