Shahpour PouyanIranVisual Arts2016

Born in Iran, in 1980, Shahpour Pouyan received his second MFA in Integrated Practices and New Forms at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, and has an MFA in Painting from the Tehran University of Art. Between 2007 and 2009 he taught art history and the history of Persian Architecture at Science and Culture University, Tehran.


Frequently combining references from across the globe into a single work, he explores the role of culture in supporting power. More recent performance, video, sculpture and installation works draw on theology, propaganda, global calendars, bombing, archaeology and war-time rescue efforts.


Pouyan has had numerous solo gallery shows including the following: Copperfield, London; Lawrie Shabibi, Dubai; XVA Gallery, Dubai. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs around the world, including: the Jameel Prize 4, Pera Museum, Istanbul; Lawrie Shabibi, Art Basel Hong Kong; Grey Art Gallery, NY; The Elgiz Museum, Istanbul; Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India, among others. In 2016, Pouyan was shortlisted for the Jameel Prize 4 by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK. Pouyan currently lives and works in New York.
