Frequently Asked Questions
What is Civitella Ranieri?

The Civitella Ranieri Center is a workplace for gifted artists from different disciplines and countries, located in a 15th century castle in the Umbria region of Italy. The Center seeks to enable its Fellows and Director’s Guests to pursue their work and to exchange ideas in this unique and inspiring setting.

How can I apply?

One cannot apply for a Civitella Ranieri Fellowship. We utilize a nomination system by requesting suggestions of candidates  from an ever-expanding network of professional colleagues who put us in touch with artists, writers and composers from all over the world, including those in developing countries.

How can I make myself known to your nominators?

Our nominators wish to remain anonymous.

Is the Civitella Ranieri Center open all year long?

Our program at the Center begins in late April and ends in the first week of November.

How many Fellows are in residence at one time?

We host approximately 12 Fellows and two to four Director’s Guests per six-week session. There are four sessions per year.

What does a Civitella Ranieri Fellowship include?

A Fellowship includes round trip economy airfare from the Fellow’s nearest home city to Rome; transportation from the Rome airport to Civitella; a private work space and apartment; lunch and dinner 6 days per week.  Our Fellows Fund was recently created to offer financial support to Fellows in need during their residency.

How often do you hold juries for the three disciplines (writing, music composition, visual arts)?

We stagger separate juries for each discipline every two years and select enough Fellows to cover the following two seasons.

May I visit the castle with advance notice?

One may visit the outside of the castle gates as it sits on a public road. Civitella Ranieri is a private residence and not open to the public. We do have many events that are open to the public, however, such as presentations by our residents, exhibitions in the gallery, public Mass held in the castle chapel, an annual concert open to people in the area, all of which are advertised through Facebook. Please see our official Facebook page for event information.

There are also tours of the gardens on the grounds available. Please see the Gardens section of the website.
